Building restoration at “Paul-Klee-Gymnasium”

How energy-efficient is the “Paul-Klee-Gymnasium (PKG)” school building?

We wondered at the beginning of our project about that question. After having completed several inspection tours, we were very worried about the blatantly bad results of the heat insulation. In comparison to other school buildings that have an average value of 80 kWh/m², our school building features a heat energy consumption characteristic value of 137 kWh/m². Actually, the benchmark of heat energy consumption is 65 kWh/m². With the school building exhibiting an enormous backlog, we decided to originate the “building restoration group” in order to highlight reasons and feasibilities.

The “building restoration group” consists of Florian Behr, Jan Denk, Christoph Herold, Stephan Lidel, Julian Schöler and Markus Schuster. In order to spruce up the school building’s energy budget we tried to fathom varied feasibilities. Thus, we also figured the wattage characteristic value that is annually 27 kWh/m². Once again, the benchmark is blatantly lower (9 kWh/m²). However, we didn’t despair but caught up on alternative heating technologies such as solar power, geothermal power or wood pellet heaters. Moreover, fluorescent lamps, electrical ballasts and the replacement of aged banks of windows contribute to our topic. Together with the installation of a solar plant, we calculated the term of amortization for all other modifications in the school building. In addition, these calculations show that any measures of modernization argue for the implementation.

In conclusion, our school obviously stands the chance to reduce costs, to protect the environment and to win the fight against global warming!
