Masdar City
The sheikhs are more famous for impressive projects like “The World” rather than for environmental conscience. But now they have combined luxury on the one hand and environmental aspects on the other. The result is a new project called Masdar City. Masdar (Arabic. masdar = source) is supposed to be supplied by 100% of solar energy. The first priority is a careful treatment of materials. So Masdar City is planned to neither emit CO2 nor produce any other waste. Masdar City consumes about 80% less water than other cities. For not wasting any energy with the cooling, winds from the north are going to be used. The city is going to cost about 14 billion Euro. It will cover an area of 640 hectare and provide space for 47.500 people. Normal cars are going to be replaced by an automatic system of public transport. There will also be a railway connection between Masdar City and Abu Dhabi and no one is supposed to have to walk for more than 200 metres to the next public transport station. The first step towards this city will be the establishment of photovoltaics facilities which provide the energy necessary for the construction of the rest of the city.
